I might be a little biased by saying this, but, with arguably the most beautiful coasts in the world, exploring Australia by water is a must. As you know, Ash and I live just 15 minutes from some of the most gorgeous beaches on the south coast, and it is by far one of our favourite places to hang. From scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef to sailing the Whitsundays, you’ll find no shortage of unforgettable water experiences to enjoy while you are visiting the land of Oz. When you’re travelling in Australia, there’s so much you’ll want to see and do, and if you can fit in some time on the water, you certainly won’t forget it.
Whale Watching in Eden
I’m starting this list off close to home, and with an experience that we highly recommend after doing it ourselves. Just an hour down the coast from us is the tiny township of Eden, which at some point in our history, was a major whaling station. These days however, Eden is better known as a major tourist destination for whale lovers. Every September through November the oceans elephants complete their southern migration, and catching a glimpse on one of the many whale watching cruises that leave from Eden is absolutely an experience you will remember for years to come.
Surfing on the Gold Coast
If you want to experience some of the best surfing experiences the world has to offer, a visit to the Gold Coast is a must. Home to the famous and aptly named Surfer’s Paradise, surfing on the Gold Coast should be up there on your Australia bucket list. With more than 70km of glorious beaches and a party atmosphere that comes to life at night, there’s never a dull moment to be had in this beautiful and lively part of Australia,
Stand Up Paddleboarding in Sydney Harbour
Sydney Harbour is one of the world’s most iconic backdrops and is an essential stop during your visit to Australia. There are some great ways you can enjoy the harbour itself, from taking one of the Sydney ferries to private yacht experiences, but one of the most enjoyable by far is by stand up paddleboarding (SUP). If you’ve never tried SUP before, you’re in for a treat. A fun twist on traditional surfing, with SUP you ride the water using a paddle to guide you while standing on your board. Pick up some Kona brand stand up paddle boards and enjoy paddleboarding with the Opera House behind you. It’s an affordable way to get out on the water, and something which you can try in many other places around Australia.
Swim with the dolphins in Port Phillip Bay
Swimming with dolphins is an incredible and memorable experience, and it’s even better in Australia. Beautiful Melbourne is home to its own stunning coastline, and around an hour and a half’s drive from the city centre, you can experience swimming with wild dolphins and seals in their natural habitat. It’s an adventure to remember, topped off with a boat trip that will show you some of the best of the Melbourne coast.
Sailing the Whitsundays
The Whitsundays are a group of 74 beautiful islands that lie between northeast Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef. Sailing around the Whitsundays has become a popular activity to enjoy while travelling in Australia, offering some truly spectacular views and unspoiled beaches and landscapes. While sailing the Whitsundays, you won’t want to miss out on the chance to explore the Great Barrier Reef, easily one of the most amazing Australian adventures you can enjoy.
Australia has more than its fair share of things to do, and it can be difficult to fit in everything during your stay. Enjoy exploring all of the wonders of Australia, and make some time to get out on the water and experience some once in a lifetime adventures.
